I laid my hand on his arm and asked, "You okay?"
"I’m....yeah, I’m fine," he said, then took a deep breath, slowly exhaled the faint scent of alcohol. "Look, I gotta go, but maybe I'll see you around, okay?"
And with that, he was gone. I considered chasing after him, but why? He knew where I was if he needed me, and I'd told him I was there for him; what more could I do?

ReplyDeleteOh, that's such a sad six. Sounds like they both need each other, but are too stubborn to seek each other out.
ReplyDeleteIt's an interesting excerpt and I'm curious about how these particular friends got to this point, but it doesn't convey Kasey's strong feelings for him that you mentioned. I'd love to see some indication that every time he walks away from her, she feels a sense of loss, making running into him a two-edged sword ... something like that.
